Van Buren Eaglettes basketball player Abigail Netherton has been playing nothing but basketball since the school year ended.
Van Buren comes off their first ever trip to the state championship last season. Netherton was a big part of that, hitting a game winning jump shot to advance Van Buren to the state championship. Netherton said she looks to make the clutch plays needed to send Van Buren back next season.
“A lot of coaches like to see that you can just like direct the floor,” Netherton said. “Even if you’re not scoring, they like to see that you can get other people scoring and make good, smart plays.”
Netherton immediately started playing AAU basketball after the state championship concluded. Netherton has since played in team camps throughout the month of June. Netherton said the turn around may be quick, but it is important.
“We lost but then we can see like oh, well we have a fresh start this year so we can immediately get back into it and try to improve,” Netherton said.
Netherton said she wants to improve on another facet of her game.
“I want to have more assists per game,” Netherton said. “I want to get that up to like 10 [per game,] and then also increase my scoring and play smarter.
Netherton looks to head back to the state championship next season. Netherton returns along most of the Van Buren basketball team.
