Livingston's Qualls Seeks Efficiency, Resolve in First Season

Livingston Wildcats Football Coach Kaleb Qualls said he has spent the off-season trying to instill goals for his first squad.

Qualls took over the head coaching position in April. Qualls said being time efficient ranks at the top of his priority list. Qualls said his assistant coaches and coaching staff have all been working together to build toward August.

“There’s a lot of just new things that you just gradually got to learn,” Qualls said. “Learning on the fly is one thing but just trying to make things as smooth as possible. That’s one thing I like to do is try to be efficient on the football field. We want to be, like we said, an organized type program so I feel we’re on the right track of that.”

The Wildcats began seven-on-seven practices last week in Upperman. Livingston will continue their drills throughout the month of July. Qualls said those practices help master techniques for the regular season.

“You like to see what route concepts, what does our quarterback like, how we’re moving in the back end,” Qualls said. “You just want to see us in the right spot. [The] execution is going to come.”

Qualls said he looks to put work in the mental side of football.

“Getting familiar with your kids and getting familiar with us [is important,]” Qualls said. “It’s a chance for them to compete. Workouts and conditioning can sometimes not be the most fun thing for them, so when they get to get out there and compete, you kind of love to see that and at that point, you know that the season’s coming around.”

Qualls will coach his first game as Livingston Academy head coach Thursday, August 21 against Cumberland County. Qualls’ first home game will take place August 29h as the Wildcats face Warren County.

“I’m enjoying it so far,” Qualls said. “Just blessed that I’ve been given this opportunity and ready to get things rolling.”
