Sparta will replace the roof at the Polk Street Fire Station.
Mayor Jerry Lowery said the station’s roof is rotten in some areas because of water damage. Lowery said the rotting has created a hole, so the city wanted to go ahead and replace the entire roof to prevent future issues.
“It’s not been like a giant gaping hole, but we want that to be an active part of our program, where the firefighters and everything can have that,” Lowery said. “And we’ve got a station there, and we just want to upgrade it and make sure that the roof’s good and everything is running smooth and not creating more problems later on inside with the water damage.”
Lowery said despite the roof’s issues, the Polk Street Fire Station has remained functional. The roof repair was included in the budget for this fiscal year.
Lowery said he is unsure of how long the roof has been there, but it has been continually been getting worse.
“We’re going to get that all going and get it repaired because we don’t need that hole getting any bigger,” Lowery said.
