Thomas, Senior Core Lead Blue Devils’ Postseason Push

For as long as she can remember, basketball has been stitched into Jackson County Lady Blue Devil basketball player Reece Thomas’ daily routine.

Long before she became a senior guard for the Jackson County High School Lady Blue Devils, Thomas was piling into cars for summer tournaments, bouncing from gym to gym with a ball in her hands and a purpose in mind. Thomas said while the calendar and uniforms changed, the commitment never did.

“I’ve played probably since I was in like fifth grade we’ve been playing summer ball,” Thomas said. “I think it’s just helped me get better with like, you know, simple things like using my left hand and dribbling better and things like that.”

Thomas said those simple things now define her role as Jackson County enters the regional tournament. Thomas comes into postseason play averaging just over four points per game, but her value stretches far beyond the scoring column. She contributes assists, creates steals and provides steady guard play for a team leaning heavily on experience this time of year.

Thomas is one of four seniors who have grown up together inside the program, a core that has developed chemistry over nearly a decade of shared seasons. Thomas said their connection did not start in high school. It started in elementary gyms, long before the bright lights of postseason basketball.

“I think it’s helped a lot,” Thomas said. “I feel like we all know each other pretty well and read each other good at what we’re going to do next. It’s definitely helped bonding wise cause we all four know each other so well and we get to know all the new people on our team that come up through the years.”

Thomas said that familiarity shows up in the smallest moments: A no-look pass in transition, a defensive switch without hesitation, a glance that signals where the next cut will come from. In tournament basketball, where possessions tighten and mistakes magnify, that trust can be the difference.

Now, the mission in front of Thomas and the Lady Blue Devils is as clear as it is ambitious. Jackson County will host Jo Byrns on Friday night, with as few as three wins away from their first trip to Murfreesboro since 2014.
