Jackson's Dill Using First Base Experience to Play Third

Junior Jaren Dill made a transition on the baseball diamond this season.

The former first baseman for the Jackson County Blue Devils, Dill broke into the starting lineup during his sophomore year. Dill and Coach Alex Bray then made the decision to place Dill at third base this season. Dill said he goes wherever the team needs him.

“Well if I’m being completely honest, I love to play a lot at first base but right now, that’s not where the team needs me,” Dill said. “I need to be at third base, so that’s where I’m going to be from now on.”

Dill stands second on the Blue Devils with a .571 on base percentage. Jaren said he has also stepped on the mound at times.

“I’ve never really been a starter, but this year I’m definitely getting a lot more opportunities.” Dill said.

Dill has been a reliever in both games he has pitched this season. He started pitching in junior high. Dill said his pitching has been shaky so far.

“I’m not the greatest pitcher, never claim to be,” Dill said. “So I’m not really ever going to be that type of starter until I, you know, really practice at it, but I’m comfortable in that reliever role from now on for now.”

Dill enters his junior year after leading Jackson County in batting average last season. He also led the team in extra base hits while playing first and third base. Dill currently is hitting above .300. He has seen a lot of at-bats this season, hitting third in the lineup for the first time ever.

“It’s been a great year so far and we’re just going to keep on building and trying to go farther.” Dill said.
