Monterey's Ramirez Expecting to Become Leader Up Front

Monterey Wildcat football player Agustin Ramirez hopes for big things his senior year.

Ramirez returns as offensive lineman for the Wildcats. Monterey will have to replace three offensive linemen, as well as other defensive ends. Agustin has played offensive line since middle school. Ramirez said his favorite part of playing left guard is keeping the line in check.

“Left guard, I mean, everything’s organized, we have to work together as a unit,” Ramirez said. “I like how we work together, we communicate, we work together as a unit so it’s basically, we mirror each other from the left side to the right side and we pretty much do the same thing.”

Agustin also plays defensive tackle for the Wildcats. Ramirez said his favorite memories occurred while on the middle school team.

“So I saw my friends [playing football] in middle school, and I just wanted to try it out and I liked it, so here I am,” Ramirez said. “Middle school we weren’t the best. We finally won our first game [my last year at middle school]…so that was probably the best moment.”

Ramirez said he looks for his team to fill the holes from last season.

“We have seniors that are going to have to step up this year,” Ramirez said. “We lost a D-lineman, he’s now a linebacker. We have some experience on the line too, but the rest are pretty much new.”

Ramirez has one sack to his name at Monterey. He got the sack last season against Gordonsville. Ramirez said his goals for this season are to get sacks at defensive line. Ramirez said he does not want to allow any sacks while playing guard.

Monterey finished 8-4 last season.
