Cookeville wants to build an additional salt storage bin as part of the makeover of the Stevens Street/Lowe Avenue recycling center.
Cookeville City Manager James Mills said the recycling center will be domed and moved with the goal of having enough space to provide a second salt storage bin. Mills said west side location would improve the service of providing salt during snow and ice storms.
“It would make more sense to have two different locations for our trucks to go to,” Mills said. “So if you are the extreme West end of town does not have to drive all the way across town to fill up thier truck to go spread salt. So we believe it is going to be much more effecient.”
Mills said the storage bin would be similar to the one that is currently stationed on West Jackson Street that holds about 1,000 tons. Mills said the city is expecting the additional salt storage bin would cost less than $10,000.
“We believe the cost will be relatively minor,” Mills said. “We are just talking about some block walls, about a 60 by 40-foot structure that would hold the salt.”
Mills said the city is working with engineers and architects to put a final plan together for the project. Mills said the city is looking to begin moving the project very soon.
“We should have a final plan in the next month or so,” Mills said. “I anticipate demolition to occur over the winter and construction to begin in the Spring. So hopefully, by early Summer we will have the new facility, the new recycling collection center done, and the salt bin constructed before next Winter.”
