White County Commissioners plan to redesign the David Culley Recreational Complex sign with an expanded budget and a Design Committee.
Commissioners introduced a design to the public, with a budget of $10,000. Steering Committee A Chair TK Austin said he would move forward with the project, as long as it did not create a budget deficit. Commissioner Becky Golden said she understands the importance of a budget, though it is not what the Commission or the public had in mind. Austin agreed with Golden.
“It doesn’t draw your, attract any attention,” Austin said. “I mean we’ve got a nice complex down there but you drive right by it at, you know, 50 miles an hour now, and, you know, you never even know it’s there.”
Commissioner Chris Brewington said said he disliked the design, as it seemed too underwhelming to represent a member of the community.
County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said funding for the sign had been cut in committee. Robinson said he would bypass the committee and consult a sign company to have it made.
“We had a very nice sign planned that would light up, you could put messages on it, a digital sign,” Robinson said. “It got axed in Committee.”
Austin said the Committee was happy with the digital sign, though funds needed to be allocated elsewhere. Austin said TDOT would not let the Committee place the sign where they wanted to place it, limiting placement options.
