A former Cumberland County deputy faces rape charges following an investigation by the TBI into allegations involving a vulnerable adult.
John Coley Jr. indicted following a probe requested by 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway. Officials said agents began investigating the allegations in October 2025 while Coley worked for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
“During the investigation, agents developed information that, while off duty, Coley sexually assaulted a vulnerable adult,” the release said.
Coley was placed on administrative leave in October when these allegations were brought forth. The statement said the department officially terminated his employment in November.
The Cumberland County Grand Jury indicted Coley on Tuesday, and charged him with two counts of Rape.
Following the indictment, the former deputy surrendered to law enforcement on Wednesday morning.
Coley turned himself into the Cumberland County Jail, where authorities subsequently booked him into custody. At the time of the release, he was being held on $1,000,000 bond.
The investigation leading to these charges began at the request of the District Attorney General.
The charges and allegations referenced are accusations of criminal conduct, not evidence. Coley is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Authorities booked Coley into the Cumberland County Jail following his surrender.
