School Restroom Renovations Slowed, Director Concerned

A slight delay has slowed the completion of renovations to the Pickett County High School restrooms.

Pickett County Director of Schools Melissa Robbins told the School Board a contractor had to find a subcontractor to install HVAC wiring, delaying the finish. Shipping delays in tile material also a concern. Robbins said the HVAC wiring has been installed in the bathrooms located in the gym and the lower hallway.

“Tomorrow, we will have drywall going up in the restrooms, and the tiling will follow that, along with all of the fixtures,” Robbins said. “The materials are in and ready to be installed, and we are really looking forward to having that.”

Robbins said that once the gym and lower hallway bathrooms are finished, the contractor will move immediately to the middle and upper hallway restrooms. She added that she would like to see the project pick up speed, noting the gym bathrooms were originally expected to be completed in January.

“That was discussed in our meeting, and they listened, and I am already beginning to see the fruit from that,” Robbins said.

Robbins said the project is now expected to be completed by mid-April and that she is looking forward to seeing the renovation finished.

“I know it’s gonna be a better facility for our students, and for our teachers, and our parents who come into the school, as well as any visitors at ballgames or events in the school,” Robbins said.

County officials met with the School Board last year and decided renovations to Pickett County High School would be a better option than building a new facility. Robbins said the school board has not had any discussions about what could potentially be the next phase in the high school renovation project.
