Local volunteers are helping residents navigate the stressful tax season by offering free preparation services at the public library.
AARP Tax-Aide program Volunteer Dee Potocnik works with a team to assist the elderly and low-income residents with their financial filings. The group handles various forms for individuals who might otherwise struggle with the complex process.
“Yes, a lot of people are very stressed over taxes,” Potocnik said. “They’re kind of afraid of the IRS and, well, I don’t think there’s a reason to be, but I can understand it.”
The Putnam County site operates at the library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30 until 3:00. Potoshnik said assistance there available on a first-come, first-serve basis, unlike the Crossville locations which require appointments.
“Well, with seniors, a lot of times there’s limited income,” Potocnik said. “And, I’m sure with the costs of having income taxes prepared, a lot of people just cannot afford it.”
Volunteers handle documents regarding stock sales, retirement income, and W-2s, though they do not process returns involving rental property or significant business expenses.
“The biggest thing you can bring back, bring with you would be last year’s taxes so we can look at that,” Potocnik said. “Any W-2s, 1099s, interest statements.”
The program assists Tennessee Tech students and surviving spouses who may not know how to manage their finances after a partner passes away.
“This is my 36th year volunteering, so I have to enjoy it,” Potocnik said. “But it’s just, it’s just a great service, you know, and, we love to do it.”
Organizers are currently working to open a new assistance site at the Senior Center in Livingston.
