A group of Cookeville High Students walked out Friday morning to protest the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
An estimated 30 students participated in the protest, with many gathering outside and holding signs. Officials said no administrators, faculty, or staff participated in, encouraged, or supported the walkout.
According to sources, students were given an area on campus to assemble. The students then left the campus, traveling down Washington Avenue and arriving at the Putnam County Courthouse, where they were joined by some adult participants.
Sources said that upon leaving the courthouse, students and adults then traveled to Dogwood Park.
School leaders at Cookeville High School said students who took part were reminded of attendance policies, which may include in-school suspension. Administrators said they are working to maintain a safe and orderly environment throughout the day for the majority of students who remained on campus and in class.
In a statement, the school officials said the school system does not take positions on political matters and remains committed to fostering a respectful environment where students can learn, think critically, and engage in constructive dialogue while staying focused on their academic success.
