Pickett Schools Approve Calendar Featuring Slight Change

Pickett County Schools has approved a school calendar for the 2026–2027 and 2027–2028 academic years.

Pickett County Director of Schools Melissa Robbins said the school system’s calendar committee met last month and presented its proposal. The first day of school will remain the first Monday in August, with the final day scheduled for late May. Robbins said the calendar closely mirrors those used in previous years, with only one notable change.

“A change that we did have is we will be closed on Veterans Day this upcoming year,” Robbins said. “We did receive some feedback about that from some people in our county, and that was brought to attention.”

Robbins said the committee also considered other potential adjustments, including moving Fall Break from the first week of October, but ultimately decided against it after determining the shift would create scheduling conflicts for students enrolled in CTE courses through TCAT Livingston.

“It needs to stay the same so that our students wouldn’t be missing instruction,” Robbins said. “We have several of our students who go to TCAT in Livingston, and we are very grateful for that program for them.”

Robbins said the calendar is designed to support both students and teachers, with the committee placing particular emphasis on building in professional development days.

“If we see that teachers need support in an area, we are going to make sure that we have days built into the calendar where we can do that and meet the needs of our teachers for our students,” Robbins said.

Robbins said state requirements limit how much flexibility the school system has when setting the calendar, but public feedback still plays an important role in the committee’s decisions. She added that even when changes are not made, community suggestions are still carefully considered.
