Jones Eyes State Title Return For Stone Flag Football

After helping power the Lady Panthers flag football team to a state championship appearance as a freshman, Mia Jones is not satisfied with simply getting back. She wants to finish the job.

Now entering her second season with Stone Memorial High School’s girls flag football program, Jones returns as one of the team’s most dynamic and versatile playmakers. A year ago, she and the Lady Panthers stormed through the bracket and advanced to the state title game, setting a high standard for what this group believes it can accomplish.

“A lot of the teammates I’ve played multiple sports with and have been with since freshman year so I already have a really good connection with them and just am continuing to have one,” Jones said. “And for the freshmen, or the younger girls I don’t know as well, I try to include them probably or encourage them while they’re out on the field, make sure they know what’s going on.”

Jones made her mark across the field during her sophomore campaign. She finished the season with 11 total touchdowns and 69 points scored, ranking among Tennessee’s top offensive contributors. Jones also totaled 479 all-purpose yards and made plays on defense as well, recording tackles and an interception return during the year.

Jones plays running back, quarterback, wide receiver and safety, a true utility player capable of influencing the game in every phase. That versatility stems from a lifelong love of football.

Jones said she grew up watching the Vols every chance she got and always dreamed of playing the sport herself. When her volleyball coach, who also led the flag football program, encouraged her to join the team before last season, Jones said she did not hesitate to join. Jones said her connection to the game clicked almost instantly, with her connection to her teammates just as important.

“Last year, us making it to state meant a lot to me,” Jones said. “I look forward to us doing well in the future.”

That leadership will be key as Stone Memorial enters its second year under the TSSAA umbrella with a new wrinkle to adjust to. The TSSAA implemented a one-yard rush rule this season, allowing defenders to pressure the quarterback immediately rather than lining up five yards off the ball. The change speeds up the game and forces offenses to make quicker reads and adjustments.

“If I’m throwing or blocking, we have to recognize the rush very quickly, which we haven’t done in the past.” Jones said.

Much of the core that reached the state championship returns, including Jones and a strong junior class determined to take the final step. With experience, chemistry and unfinished business driving them forward, Jones and Stone Memorial are not just aiming for another deep run. They are chasing a trophy.
