Sparta Aldermen Approve Bid Process For Substation Work


The Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a request Thursday night to solicit bids for new circuit breakers to support an electrical substation upgrade.

Sparta Mayor Jerry Lowery addressed the board regarding the need for infrastructure improvements following recent discussions with utility experts. Lowery said officials identified specific equipment upgrades required to modernize the system.

“We’re moving toward upgrading our substation into a really nice substation that will be able to supply not only more electricity, but more reliable electricity and power to our citizens and to industries,” Lowery said.

The decision follows a recent consultation with the electric department and engineers regarding the system’s needs. The upgrade is intended to modernize the infrastructure.

The board authorized the search for specific equipment needed to begin the process.

“I’m asking the motion to be solicit bids for one 161 kilovolts circuit breaker and five 13 kilovolts circuit breakers so we can get some of that started,” Lowery said.

In other business, Aldermen pledged support for a Community Development Block Grant. The city seeking $100,000 for a water system rehab project. The resolution pledges to meet the city match.

Aldermen also adopted the 2024 Editions of the International Fire, Building, Cloning, Residential, Fuel, Gas, Property, Maintenance, Model, Energy, Existing, Building, and Mechanical Codes.
