Cookeville Lady Cavs Heading To Consecutive State Semifinals


The Cookeville Lady Cavaliers will play in the Class 4A State Semifinals after defeating Page Thursday morning, 55-47.

Cookeville opened the game seeing Page jump out to a 10-2 lead. Cookeville closed the quarter trailing 17-12. The Lady Cavaliers battled back to tie the game in the second quarter, but Page would maintain a two point lead going into halftime.

The third quarter would see Cookeville take their first lead at the free throw line, a lead they would hold for the rest of the game. Cookeville would take a six point lead after three quarters, extending the lead to double digits early in the fourth to secure the win.

Cara Lee Gilbert led the Lady Cavaliers in scoring with 17 points. Gilbert went 10 of 13 from the free throw line and hit the free throw to give the Lady Cavaliers the lead in the third quarter. Callie Gilbert added 16 off the bench, finishing four of five shooting, making both of her threes, and connecting on six of her eight free throws.

The Lady Cavaliers’ defense held Page to 24.7 percent shooting, with three field goals made in the entire second half. Cookeville shot 19 of 23 on their free throw attempts in the second half.

Up next for Cookeville is a rematch of last year’s state semifinals. The Lady Cavaliers will face Bartlett Friday afternoon at 4 pm, with coverage on 106-9 Kicks Country.
