Hughes Leads Livingston Into First Flag Football Game

As the Livingston Academy Lady Wildcats launch their first-ever flag football team, junior Mia Hughes said she is embracing both the opportunity and the responsibility that comes with building a program from the ground up.

“[I’m] just trying to set a leadership role,” Hughes said. “If we’re more bonded and play together it will just be better overall.”

Hughes, a multi-sport athlete who has competed in basketball, volleyball and softball, is part of a core group helping introduce the sport to Livingston. Like many of her teammates, Hughes said she is making the transition from the hardwood to the football field, bringing athleticism and chemistry with her.

That familiarity has carried over quickly, especially with a familiar face on the sideline. Assistant basketball coach Marlee Sells now takes over as head coach of the flag football team, helping spark early interest when the program was announced.

“We all got excited,” Hughes said. “A few girls on the basketball team were most definitely ready to play and we got a few other girls to join as well.”

The early days, however, have been a learning process. Hughes said the Lady Wildcats have spent their first week of practice focused on understanding the rules, building fundamentals and adjusting to the pace of the game. Hughes said that growth is already showing, particularly on the defensive side.

Hughes is expected to play safety this spring. Her connection to the sport runs deeper than just this season. She was introduced to football at a young age through her father, while also watching her brother play during his high school career.

Now, Hughes said she is helping bring that experience full circle. As Livingston prepares to take the field for the first time in program history, Hughes said she understands the bigger picture. Wins and losses may come later, but right now, the focus is on growth and setting a foundation.

“The first few games if we are learning and make a few mistakes, I think that’s okay,” Hughes said. “But as the season progresses, I hope that we win and we’re a threat to other teams.”

That journey begins tonight, as Livingston Academy hosts Warren County High School in the Wildcats’ inaugural game, a moment Hughes and her teammates hope is just the start of something lasting.
