Alvarez Brings Global Game to Tennessee Tech Tennis

For Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles men’s tennis player Alex Alvarez, the journey to Cookeville started long before college, and far beyond the United States.

A native of Spain, Alvarez grew up immersed in the sport, competing in tournaments across his home country and internationally. Alvarez said tennis for him and his family is not just a game but rather another culture.

Alvarez said he first picked up a racket at just three years old, following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and older brother, all of whom played the sport competitively.

That culture helped shape a player who now serves as a key contributor for the Golden Eagles, competing near the top of the singles lineup while also forming one of the team’s strongest doubles pairings. But Alvarez said his path was not guaranteed.

“It’s a tough decision to make when you’re back home,” Alvarez said. “We have to really make a decision if you want to go professional tennis, which is really tough and you have to give up a lot of things.”

Instead of turning pro right away, Alvarez chose the college route, a decision he said offers a rare balance. Alvarez said one good thing the United States colleges bring is the opportunity to get a degree while working on your tennis game.

That balance has paid off both on and off the court. Alvarez has emerged as a reliable presence for Tennessee Tech, delivering key singles wins and anchoring doubles alongside a nationally ranked partner. His experience competing internationally has translated into composure in tight matches and consistency across the lineup.

Still, Alvarez said the transition from Spain to American college tennis has not come without adjustments.

“I think Spanish players have a very different style,” Alvarez said. “They fight for every ball. I would say college tennis is a bit different than this style cause it’s more like, not rushing.”

That relentless, grind-it-out approach is often developed on clay courts, the surface Alvarez grew up playing on. At Tennessee Tech, however, most matches are played on hard courts, forcing him to adapt both technically and mentally.

Over time, Alvarez said he has added a new dimension to his game, aggressiveness, while also embracing one of the biggest differences in the college format in the team environment.

“It’s important not just the ones that are playing but the ones that are supporting,” Alvarez said. “If we really want to do good this season and win the conference, it’s something that every one of us has to do their job in and out of the court and I think that’s one thing that’s really good [about our team.]”

Now one of ten players on the Golden Eagles roster, Alvarez continues to blend his Spanish roots with his evolving college style, bringing intensity, experience and a team-first mentality to Tennessee Tech’s push for success this season.
