Crossville Council Praise City Manager In Annual Review

The Crossville City Council giving high marks to City Manager Valerie Hale following her latest annual performance review.

Council Member James Mayberry said the evaluation focused on several key areas, including how the city manager interacts with employees, communicates with residents, and carries out the priorities of the mayor and council. Hale received an average score of 4.78 out of 5, a rating Mayberry said reflects her performance well, though he personally rated her performance higher.

“She has had several years as the city clerk before she became the city manager, and is very knowledgeable of every aspect that is involved with the position,” Mayberry said.

Mayberry said Hale has improved the city’s transparency by notifying the public about what is happening in Crossville. Council Member Art Gernt said Hale has done a great job, particularly with reaching out to department heads and employees.

“She’s done a great job,” Gernt said. “I know as a council member, I know how well she is received by the employees and the public.”

Both council members emphasized the importance of a strong working relationship between the city manager and elected officials. Mayberry said Hale consistently ensures council members have the information they need to make decisions.

“If we need to talk to… the comptroller of the state or anybody… she makes it happen,” Mayberry said.

Gernt said Hale’s communication has helped the council tremendously when making decisions that impact the city.

“She keeps us informed quickly and promptly so we’re not blindsided by something,” Gernt said.

Both council members said they did not identify any glaring areas that Hale would need to improve upon. Both said future expectations remain straightforward.

“Basically just carry on with all the things that she’s doing… keep us all informed so we can make informed decisions,” Mayberry said.

Gernt said he points to ongoing projects like downtown improvements, a new recreation center, and public safety investments as areas where Hale’s leadership will remain key.

“Mainly just keep on keeping on,” Gernt said. “She’s done a great job getting us grants and overseeing projects,” Gernt said.

Council reviewed the annual performance review during Tuesday’s work session. Hale has served as the city manager since 2024.
