Monterey Highway Experiences Brief Shutdown After Crash

Monterey Highway (Highway 70) experienced a brief shutdown near the Mountain View Market area on Wednesday after a single-vehicle crash.

Putnam County Sheriff Eddie Farris said the lone vehicle contained a female driver who had run off the road, flipped, and struck the nearby embankment. Farris said the crash is still under investigation.

“We did not find any contributing factors at this time,” Farris said. “We don’t think speed was a factor, so we are just looking to see. The road up there is sort of curvy in the section that it was, and the road was shut down for a little bit of time.”

Farris said the lone occupant in the vehicle sustained injuries in the crash and was extricated and airlifted to a hospital. Farris said the area has since been cleared and reopened.

Farris said a crash like this does not happen often in good weather.

“We do have some accidents up through there. Normally, when we do that, we’ve got wet roadways or icy, snowy conditions of that sort,” Farris said. “But anyway, this is a little bit unusual.”
