Jackson County Schools will offer a free, four-week summer learning camp for students to combat academic learning losses in English and math.
Pre-K-8th grade supervisor Caroline Woodason said the program is designed for students throughout the state of Tennessee who are at risk of falling behind academically. Woodason said the camp is scheduled to begin May 27th and will run through June 22nd.
“It helps by lessening the summer learning gap,” Woodason said. “Students who have six weeks off of school tend to have a learning gap where they just start behind from where they ended. And so having this program helps lessen that gap. It helps keep them focused on reading.”
Woodason said the daily schedule includes dedicated time for English and math alongside response to intervention sessions focused on specific student learning gaps. Woodason said the program also incorporates physical education and STEM activities to ensure the experience is enjoyable for children.
“That that is always a balance in everything,” Woodason said. “We have different teachers with different strengths who make sure that the students have both opportunities for enrichment and academics. And we also with the academics, not only look at the gaps, but we look at previewing and excelling the students so that they are ready for the next grade.”
Woodason said the district uses student data, test scores and teacher recommendations to prioritize enrollment for those with the greatest academic needs. Woodason said the school system provides transportation, breakfast, lunch and snacks to make the program accessible.
“We want as few barriers as possible,” Woodason said. “And it’s free.”
Woodason also said the program helps students maintain their social skills and stay in the rhythm of following directions within a school day format. Woodason said the state of Tennessee administers and reviews a post-test at the conclusion of the camp to measure student progress.
Woodason said families interested in the program can call their individual schools to find more information on times and specific opportunities.
