Upper Cumberland Counties Secure Perkins CTE Grants

Nine school districts and institutions across the Upper Cumberland have secured a portion of more than $2.6 million in Perkins Reserve Grant funds to support Career and Technical Education for the 2026-2027 school year.

Commissioner of Education Lizzette Reynolds said the grant recipients submitted applications outlining action steps to support the FutureReadyTN state plan. Reynolds said the funding is supported by four pillars including credentials of value, seamless transitions, individualized advising, and work-based learning.

“Our mission is to provide every student with the knowledge and skills necessary for success after graduation, whether they pursue college, enter the workforce, or serve in the military,” Reynolds said.

Officials said the Perkins Reserve Grant is a competitive opportunity made possible by the federal Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act. Officials said the 2018 act provides annual federal funding to support Career and Technical Education programs nationwide.

“We are excited to see districts use these grant funds to create engaging career exploration programs for elementary and middle school students and to inspire them in emerging and expanding career fields,” Reynolds said.

Officials said the goal of the grant is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to thrive in an evolving economy.

Officials said Putnam, White, Jackson, Fentress, Cumberland, and Cannon County Schools each received $50,000. Officials said Overton County Schools received $46,150, DeKalb County Schools received $39,252, and Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute received $37,500.
