Fight Flu Tennessee Provides Free Statewide Vaccinations

Health departments across the state will offer free flu vaccinations at more than 200 locations Tuesday as part of the annual Fight Flu Tennessee initiative.

Overton County Health Department Supervisor Megan Reeder said the statewide effort allows local agencies to practice large-scale response operations while providing easy access to protection. The event is open to any resident at least six months of age regardless of their insurance status.

“We like to make it easier because making it free, there’s no reason to not get one,” Reeder said. “But all local health departments will have plenty of vaccine available ensuring that everyone ages six months and older can get one at no cost.”

Reeder said the Overton County Health Department will host a clinic from 8:30am to 4pm on the day of the event. Staff will also provide vaccinations at Jerry’s IGA from 8:30am until 3pm.

“Well, getting the flu shot before the flu season begins is the best way to protect yourself and others,” Reeder said. “And since it takes about two weeks for immunity to build, getting vaccinated early helps ensure that you’re protected when the flu activity actually starts to rise.”

Reeder said residents should bring identification to the clinic sites. Parents or guardians must accompany any children receiving a vaccination.

“So if we can get you vaccinated and get you full protection before the flu even starts to circulate, then hopefully we can even stop the circulation,” Reeder said.

Reeder said the vaccine is especially important for pregnant women, infants, and older adults. People living with chronic medical conditions also face the highest risk of developing serious complications or requiring hospitalization.

“Well, we expect a strong participation across our communities with our families, schools, residents,” Reeder said. “So we wanted to make it as easy as possible.”

Reeder said residents can receive the free shot in any county regardless of where they live. Those seeking the nearest participating location can find a list of sites and hours on the Fight Flu TN website.
