The Heroes on a Mission Foundation hosting a free community tribute concert featuring Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Artemis Pyle in Silver Point Saturday.
Heroes on a Mission Executive Director Michael Pierce said the concert is intended to recognize both those who died serving the country and veterans who continue to live with the effects of their service.
“I hope that they just take a step back and be thankful that we have young men and women that step up and are willing to defend our country,” Pierce said. “A lot have given their lives for this country and just to just to have a moment of respect and gratitude.”
Pierce said the gathering also provides veterans with an opportunity to spend time with others who understand their experiences while connecting with members of the community.
Heroes on a Mission uses its 289-acre facility for PTSD retreats and disabled hunts for veterans and first responders. The foundation also visits VA clinics twice a year to provide meals for medical staff and patients.
Pierce said the event coincides with the arrival of The Wall That Heals Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the Putnam County fairgrounds.
Pierce said 25 local sponsors made it possible for the foundation to offer the concert to the public for free.
“It just gives them an opportunity to pay back respect, not only to give respect to the individuals that have given their lives for our country, but also to get the respect that they deserve,” Pierce said. “So it works hand in hand.”
Pyle, a former member of the military, along with Lee Newton will headline the show. Pierce said Newton has made supporting service members and veterans an important part of her work.
“She is very pro-military,” Pierce said. “She is out to do anything she can for active duty and veterans that she can do.”
Gates will open at 1pm to accommodate traffic before music begins at 3pm. Local high school students will open the festivities by honoring the colors. Attendees should bring lawn chairs, and the event is expected to conclude around 10pm.
