The TBI identified human remains discovered at Sparta’s old water treatment plant as missing 40-year-old Nikkie Simmons.
TBI Public Information Officer Mariah Dunlop said special agents responded to the 200 block of North Main Street at the request of 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway. The remains were recovered from the property and sent to the Nashville Forensic Center for examination.
Sparta Police previously reported Simmons missing after she was last seen leaving behind her phone and other personal belongings.
Police said information obtained from Simmons’ husband led investigators to the lower level of the old water treatment facility, where the remains were discovered.
TBI continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Simmons’ death.
