Favorable Weather Bolsters Big South Fork Firefighting

Sunday’s favorable weather conditions helped firefighters reach 75 percent containment on the 220-acre Cactus Fire in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.

National Park Service officials said the wildfire saw minimal activity over the weekend due to cooler temperatures, rising humidity, and rainfall. Fentress County Fire Department officials said no homes are currently threatened by the blaze that was originally reported on Thursday near Darrow Ridge Road.

National Park Service officials said the fire was approximately 10 acres on Thursday night before growing to 220 acres by Saturday. Fentress County Fire Department officials said all previously announced temporary closures and restrictions remain in effect as crews continue their work.

National Park Service officials said the cause of the fire near Cactus Rock in Jamestown remains under investigation.
