Heavy Election Day Turnout Reported Across Upper Cumberland

Voters across the Upper Cumberland are turning out in large numbers for Tuesday’s midterm election, with several counties reporting steady traffic and lines.

Strong participation following an early voting period that saw more than 26,000 ballots cast across six counties. Despite the heavy turnout, officials report few problems with voting equipment or the election process.

Overton County Administrator of Elections Craig Story said Election Day turnout has remained similar to the pace seen during early voting. Story expects the number of ballots cast Tuesday to reach or exceed the county’s early voting total of 3,557.

Putnam County election officials report a busy Election Day, with no issues at polling locations. The county entered Tuesday with 13,236 early votes already cast, representing nearly 25 percent of registered voters.

Jackson County Administrator of Elections Drew McMillian reported strong turnout and a steady flow of voters throughout the day. Several precincts experienced lines at times, with a couple of locations recording more than 100 voters. McMillian said the voting process has moved smoothly with no issues reported.

Cumberland County has also experienced heavy turnout, with some precincts reporting lines throughout the day. Interest in Crossville’s water referendum and vacant city council seats may be contributing to the increased participation. Election officials report no issues despite the large crowds.

White County Administrator of Elections Sherry Anderson reported heavy voter participation and said she is pleased with the turnout. Election workers initially suspected a problem with a ballot scanner at the Ag Building polling location, but cleaning the scanner resolved the issue. The equipment has operated normally since.

The strong Election Day participation follows an early voting period in which five of six surveyed Upper Cumberland counties surpassed their August 2026 totals. All six counties exceeded their early voting numbers from the 2022 gubernatorial general election.

Putnam County led the six-county group with 13,236 early votes, followed by White County with 4,197, Overton County with 3,557, Fentress County with 3,230, Jackson County with 1,622 and Clay County with 1,029.

Final Election Day turnout totals remain unavailable as voting continues across the region. Polls close at 7pm Tuesday.
