A vacant seat remains in the White County Commission.
County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said while he was preparing an outline of the steps, he found that a seven day public notice is required before taking candidates. That did not happen in time for February’s commission meeting.
“Which is different than a normal meeting notice that we have to put in,” Robinson said. “So that was two separate notices. I made that mistake. I assumed the meeting notice would be sufficient, but it is not. We have to do a special notice. That will probably take place at the March meeting to give me adequate time to get it advertised.”
Robinson said the county has 120 days to fill the district seven position. Robinson said his office has five residents that have expressed interest in filling the seat of Bobby McCulley, who resigned in January.
“I advised them the same thing that they need to contact a county commissioner,” Robinson said. “And preferably more than one. The county commission is the one who fills this vacancy. They are the ones that vote on it. So anybody interested need to reach out to a county commissioner.”
The process of appointment starts with the chairman taking nominations from the floor. Commissioners can mention one candidate. Once all nominations are taken, a roll call vote will take place.
The winning candidate must receive majority of the vote. If a majority is not established after the first round, the person with the lowest number will be dropped. This process continues until a winner is decided.
District seven does not go unrepresented with Commissioner Stanley Neal still in service.
